A look back at 2018

NKN 2018 timeline

The end of the year offers all of us a great opportunity to look back and reflect on the accomplishments of 2018. For NKN, it’s clear that the team has accomplished a lot since the inception of the project in January. 2018 saw the development and release of NKN’s open source software as well as the launch of both a preview and public testnet. This public tesnet net reached nearly 6,000 nodes with a majority of those nodes being hosted by the community. NKN also attracted talented technical advisors including Dr. Whitfield Diffie and Dr Stephen Wolfram to join the project and help optimize our underlying technology.

On the Business Development side, NKN has begun to create an ecosystem of partners that will help build applications and services on NKN’s network. NKN has partnered with companies like IoTex for IoT solutions, and Portal Network for Name Service and integrated web 3.0 developer tools, just to name a few. NKN also joined the Telecom Infrastructure Project (TIP) and Open Network Foundation (ONF) to drive innovation and boost adoption of new telecom solutions using NKN. In December, NKN was recognized by Nokia as an innovative startup during the Nokia Open Innovation Challenge.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our amazing community, partners and friends for your support in 2018. We could not have done it without you! As we look toward the new year, 2019 promises to be another amazing year for NKN as we continue to grow our community and our network toward our mainnet launch in June 2019. Happy holidays to all, let’s all wish for a bright and exciting 2019!

Founder and CEO Stephen Wolfram joins NKN as technical advisor

NKN is excited to have Dr. Stephen Wolfram, founder and CEO of Wolfram Research, join the NKN project as technical advisor. Inspired by Wolfram’s seminal book A New Kind of Science (often dubbed “NKS”) the founders of NKN aspire to build a New Kind of Network based on simple programs known as cellular automata for a truly decentralized and horizontally scalable data transmission network and novel blockchain. Wolfram will provide technical guidance and entrepreneurial mentorship to the NKN project.

About NKN

NKN is a new kind of network connectivity protocol & ecosystem powered by blockchain for an open, decentralized, and shared Internet. By blockchainizing the network layer, NKN is providing the missing third pillar of internet infrastructure. Just as Ethereum has done for compute and Filecoin for storage, NKN will decentralize network connectivity and transmission.
